“I was spoiled.” Pedro Nuno Santos says cabal theory against the Government is “ridiculous”

Pedro Nuno Santos considers that Luís Montenegro did not respond to the questions raised in the debate on the motion of censure and is evaluating “whether there is another way to get the answers” considering that the Prime Minister did not speak about the matter again.
In addition to this, in reaction to the Observador article which reports that Luís Montenegro, faced with the succession of cases and little affairs in the Government, points the finger at interests in real estate and the media , the PS leader considers that it is “ sufficiently serious for the Government to feel the need to confirm or deny ”.
“The Government was spoiled ”, Pedro Nuno Santos said at a press conference in which he was questioned about the news in question and said “it is not acceptable in our democracy to try to condition the media ” — which led him to challenge the Government to come and say whether or not it is true that Luís Montenegro and his closest men have that thought.
“I think it is serious that they are trying to sneakily convey the idea that this case only exists because some media outlets have an anti-government agenda,” he stressed, while criticizing the “argument” for being “ridiculous.” “But the intentions are there ,” he stressed, adding: “I think what is there is absurd and I think one of the arguments in the article is ridiculous: that there are shady real estate interests that do not want the new law to be approved because it will lower property prices.”

“This article only has off-the- record sources, which gives the Government the opportunity to deny that it believes it is being targeted by a cabal ,” highlighted the PS secretary-general. “ I don’t remember the PS creating this off- the-record conversation when we had very intense press coverage of a series of cases in the government,” compared the PS leader, in a reference to the cases and little affairs of António Costa’s time.
Still on Luís Montenegro's company, Pedro Nuno Santos made it clear that “the demand for transparency has never hurt anyone ” and, faced with the statements of Aguiar-Branco — who said that a climate of “confusion” is being created with controversies over the land law and politicians with shares in real estate companies — he clarified that “the good ones in politics are those who are not afraid of transparency and scrutiny”.
“When people come to public office they have to be available for scrutiny ”, he justified, stressing that “one thing is populism, lies, unacceptable exploitation of private life situations, another thing is asking for transparency and answers to fundamental questions to scrutinize those who govern us”.
Pedro Nuno Santos does not agree “at all with the idea that the request for transparency that is being made is being exaggerated” and, as such, considers that the Prime Minister “ is avoiding the main issue : he is one of the people with the most power in Portugal and that is why he has an increased duty of transparency.”
“We have already asked the Prime Minister questions in the parliamentary debate and there have been no answers to those questions,” he reiterated, acknowledging that the PS is “evaluating” what else can be done: “The PS has already asked the questions in the debate. We will evaluate whether there is another way to get the answers.”
